Why You Feel Depleted and Overstimulated at the Same Time
When constant stress becomes normal, your body loses its natural ability to find calm
Your body is caught in an impossible contradiction: Exhausted from running on stress hormones all day, but too activated to rest.
You collapse into bed mentally drained, but your mind won't stop racing. You desperately need downtime, but when you try to relax, you feel more anxious or even guilty.
What if your exhaustion, your difficulty “keeping up” or “winding down” wasn’t viewed as a character flaw or poor time management, but as a natural consequence of living in the world we live in?
Your nervous system is actually stuck in survival mode because of the constant 24/7 inputs that are designed to keep it that way: in this context, dysregulation is the norm, not the exception, and no amount of willpower, or the latest fad exercise or diet, will magically fix this challenge. But the good news is you can.
You need tools that teach your body how to shift out of crisis mode into safe - tools that work for you anywhere anytime, even when life won't slow down.

What if you can’t imagine your mind being “quiet”?
That makes total sense. Even if you have tried techniques to relax - calming or quieting the mind, reducing stress and tension is difficult these days.
Stand alone “relaxation techniques” and one off meditation practices weren't designed for a culture that virtually ensures that without conscious practice, our minds never stop.
If you have tried meditation or mindfulness and can’t just 'let go' or 'be still, or if your thoughts are overwhelming when you try to relax, first, recognize that this is ok, and it is not your fault.
When your nervous system has been in survival mode for months or even years, some approaches can feel ineffective or even make things feel worse.
At path to calm, we know that every person is different. You need methods that meet you where you are, in your body, in your life, in your busy mind or overwhelm. You need tools that take you from where you are right now to regulated, safer, not teachers or practices that make you feel like you are failing if you can’t go from 100 miles an hour to “blissed out”.
Your Nervous System Might Need a Different Approach
My nervous system was stuck in overdrive for decades too
I Recognize That Feeling
As a social justice activist, and trauma-informed attorney working with abuse survivors, I thought constant stress was just part of the job.
For most of my early adult life, I powered through 16-hour days, managed crisis after crisis, and told myself I was handling it fine. Until my body started breaking down.
Autoimmune conditions, chronic inflammation, depression—my nervous system was screaming at me for help and attention, but I just didn't know how to listen.
When physical challenges became too much to ignore, I discovered these practices weren't luxury self-care. They were actually necessary survival tools, a form of resistance to a broader culture that was literally pushing me and everyone around me to a dysregulated state.

If You're Living in Survival Mode...
Caring for Everyone and Everything Else, Putting Yourself Last
You start (and fill) your day with caffeine to function, and then end it with alcohol or other addictive substances to try to turn it all off. You’re wide awake at 3am with your mind racing, desperately hoping for sleep that won’t come. You give everything to your job, your family, your community, appearing like you have it all together. But you’ve been the strong one for so long, you’ve forgotten what it feels like to not be in crisis mode. When it comes to caring for yourself? You don’t even know where to start.
Path to Calm:
From Survival to Regulation
What you'll experience as you learn to heal and regulate your nervous system
Your nervous system will start to remember what safety feels like. The constant mental chatter begins to quiet. Rest becomes restful, and you’ll finally get that restorative sleep that has been so elusive. You'll learn to recognize the difference between real emergencies and your nervous system's false alarms.
Most importantly, you'll learn to care for yourself with the same compassion you give everyone else.

My journey through trauma-informed training, Buddhist study, and nature-based wisdom
Beyond walking this path myself, I've also spent 25+ years in formal study:
- Certified Mindfulness Meditation Instructor through UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center (led by Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield)
- Multiple TriYoga certifications: movement, breathwork, and meditation
- 25+ years studying Buddhist meditation traditions
- Nature-based wisdom learned from the mountains of Central Pennsylvania, where I can often be found when not teaching
